What is an IBCLC Lactation Consultant?
"An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) is a health care professional who specializes in the clinical management of breastfeeding. IBCLCs are certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, Inc. (www.iblce.org) under the direction of the U.S. National Commission for Certifying Agencies. IBCLCs work in a wide variety of health care settings, including hospitals, pediatric offices, public health clinics, and private practice."

Consumers seeking breastfeeding help may find the search confusing. Anyone can call themselves a "lactation consultant"; it’s not a protected title. Some week-long or even weekend courses in breastfeeding do offer various, easily confused titles, acronyms and certifications – Certified Lactation Counselor, Certified Lactation Educators, Lactation Specialist, etc.
Only the designation IBCLC reassures you that the breastfeeding helper meets certain standards of lactation education and clinical experience, backed up by a recognized certifying body.
