About Margaret Sabo Wills

My breastfeeding education began, unofficially, more than 20 years ago, home from the hospital with a newborn who wouldn’t nurse. My husband had to encourage me to call someone from a profession I’d never heard of. Yet, with an IBCLC's early hands-on help, and the ongoing support of my local La Leche League group, my first baby and I sustained a happy breastfeeding relationship, and our family welcomed another beautiful breastfeeding baby a few years later. I realized what we would have missed by stopping breastfeeding in that first panicky week – and became passionate about helping other women and babies as I had been helped.

As a volunteer, I spent over a decade leading breastfeeding support meetings and working one-on-one with nursing mothers by phone and in person, while reading and learning more on this multi-faceted topic. Finally admitting that my volunteer work was more satisfying than my "real" job, I began more formalized breastfeeding education to add the title of IBCLC in 2001.

Many lactation consultants begin their careers in a hospital environment. But my background -- meeting with so many mothers with babies progressing from newborns to toddlers, employed or working at home, with happy, uncomplicated stories or heroic sagas of difficulties overcome -- helps me understand the "full circle" of breastfeeding experiences, beyond that first week. My goal is to find practical ways for women to enjoy breastfeeding their babies, as part of their highly varied lives.

As part of my private practice, I teach prenatal classes at a local hospital. I'm currently a member of The International Lactation Consultants Association (ILCA) as well as local professional LC groups and on-line forums.
